The Cannes Film Festival lineup for 2026 has been unveiled. It brings together many celebrated filmmakers from many countries. This year’s selection highlights strong participation from Europe and Asia. Well-known directors such as Asghar Farhadi, Pedro Almodóvar, and Hirokazu Kore-eda will present new projects in the main competition. The announcement shows the festival’s focus on artistic storytelling and cinema from many countries.

Strong International Lineup Shapes This Year’s Selection

Among the standout entries is a new film by Ira Sachs titled The Man I Love. It is set in the 1980s New York and centers on the AIDS crisis. The film features Rami Malek and Rebecca Hall, adding star power to the indie focused lineup. Organizers describe the film as a personal look at friendship and loss during a health crisis that shaped many lives in New York. It also reflects Sachs’s focus on character-driven storytelling.

Asghar Farhadi returns to the festival with Parallel Stories, his latest work since his earlier award winning projects. The film features Isabelle Huppert and Vincent Cassel. Hirokazu Kore eda presents Sheep in the Box, a project that explores themes around artificial intelligence. Critics note that the film continues Farhadi’s interest in moral choices and human conflict. It also strengthens his reputation for intimate drama. The project draws attention for its strong ensemble cast.

Spanish cinema also plays a key role this year, with Pedro Almodóvar bringing Bitter Christmas to the competition. His longtime collaborators, including Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz, also appear in separate films, strengthening Spain’s presence at the festival. The film Bitter Christmas continues his long focus on complex relationships and emotional tension. Industry watchers expect strong audience interest in the Spanish entries this year.

The lineup includes films from Palme d’Or winning directors such as Cristian Mungiu, whose film Fjord is backed by award winning distributor Neon. Overall, the selection reflects a mix of established names and fresh voices, with five women directors presenting films in competition.

Neon continues to back several award winning directors, adding visibility to independent films in the lineup. These selections highlight both experience and new talent across the competition.

Beyond the main competition, other sections of the festival also feature highly anticipated projects. Jane Schoenbrun returns with Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, opening the Un Certain Regard section. In addition, well known directors like Nicolas Winding Refn and Ron Howard will showcase films outside the competition categories

. Schoenbrun’s return adds attention to the Un Certain Regard section, which often highlights unusual storytelling styles. Festival programmers include focus on identity technology and social themes. This section gives space for directors who work outside mainstream production systems.

The festival will open with The Electric Kiss, directed by Pierre Salvadori, setting the tone for what promises to be a diverse and engaging event. Special screenings and premieres also feature projects from Steven Soderbergh and John Travolta, whose directorial debut will be presented during the event. 

Salvadori sets a tone that emphasizes character emotion and visual style in the opening film. Organizers expect strong attendance at premieres throughout the event schedule.

More than 2,500 films were submitted this year, showing rising interest in the festival. Even with fewer blockbuster entries, the Cannes Film Festival lineup shows strong commitment to storytelling, creativity, and cinema from many countries. The festival runs from May 12 to May 23 and brings filmmakers, actors, and audiences together at one of its most respected stages. 

Submission numbers continue to rise each year as filmmakers seek recognition at Cannes. Audiences can expect a wide mix of storytelling styles across the program. This year’s event also strengthens networking between creators and industry professionals.
