Hope Street Star Finnian Garbutt Reveals Terminal Cancer Battle

The actor, who plays police constable Ryan Power, took to Instagram on Sunday to share the news with fans, reflecting on his journey since being first diagnosed with skin cancer five years ago.
Garbutt disclosed that he had surgery in 2022 to remove the initial cancer. Despite this, the disease progressed rapidly. In August 2024, just two weeks before the birth of his daughter, Saoirse, he was diagnosed with Stage IV melanoma. This devastating news came as he and his wife, Louise Agnew, welcomed their first child.
In his heartfelt Instagram post, Finnian Garbutt cancer update, he wrote about the pain he has experienced in recent months, particularly in his back and hip, which prompted further medical observation and scans. “Unfortunately, the scans have shown that the cancer has progressed rapidly in my body, and I am now entering the last stages of my life,” he wrote.
The actor explained that sharing this news publicly allows him to focus on the most important aspects of life spending time with friends and family. “I hope, now that it’s in the open, I can enjoy the time with my amazing family and friends,” he said.

Finnian reflected on the milestones he has achieved despite his illness, including starring in 30 episodes of a TV show, leading in a movie soon to be released, buying a house, marrying his best friend, and becoming a father.
Garbutt’s announcement resonated with fans and colleagues, highlighting both his accomplishments and the resilience he has shown throughout his battle with cancer.
“Thank you to all that have reached out over the years and supported me and my family,” he said. “If anyone wants to meet up for a pint, coffee, or general bit of craic, please reach out and we can try and make it work.”
The actor’s journey began when he first noticed a mole on his scalp, which led him to consult a GP. He was diagnosed with stage three malignant melanoma and immediately urged others to get checked. “Prior to this diagnosis, I had no idea about this disease. Now, actually having it at an advanced level, it is devastating and has changed my life completely,” he said in a previous interview.
Finnian emphasized the importance of early detection. “If caught early, melanoma is very treatable.” He explained that once it spreads to the lymphatic system, it can move rapidly throughout the body. Despite being cautious, he rarely sunbathes and has never used a sunbed. He stressed that melanoma can affect anyone.
In December, he shared a reflective post marking four years since his initial diagnosis. “It’s been a mad journey so far. Major surgery, countless scans and biopsies, ten different treatments, and now in search of a clinical trial,” he wrote. He expressed deep gratitude for the support of his family, particularly his wife and daughter, who have been central to his journey.

This latest announcement is a reminder of the human side of Finnian’s career. Fans know him as the determined constable Ryan Power in Hope Street. However, his openness about his health struggles shows the strength and vulnerability behind the roles he portrays. His message encourages others to monitor their health closely. People should not ignore unusual symptoms, even if they consider themselves healthy.
Despite the challenges ahead, Garbutt has maintained a positive outlook. He focuses on making memories with loved ones. He embraces life’s moments and shares his journey honestly with fans. His courage in speaking publicly about his terminal diagnosis has drawn widespread support. Fans and fellow actors alike have rallied around him.
As Finnian continues his fight, his journey reminds us all of the fragility of life and the importance of prioritizing health, family, and meaningful experiences. His transparency and advocacy for early detection will likely save lives and inspire many to take their own health more seriously.
