Britain’s Jack Draper staged a remarkable comeback to beat Novak Djokovic and reach the Indian Wells fourth round, in a victory Draper described as a potential “real big moment” for his season. Draper, the defending champion at the tournament, overcame the 24-time Grand Slam winner 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in what he called a “real physical battle” lasting two hours and 35 minutes.

The win is especially significant for Draper, who is attempting to rebuild his career after an eight-month struggle with an arm injury. “To beat Novak is mind-blowing,” Draper told BBC Sport. “I’ve idolised him since I was a kid.

There’s unbelievable respect for the player that he is. I still want to play better and feel better on the court, but coming back after such a long time and winning three tough matches, it’s huge for me. This will be a real big moment I’ll look back on in a few months.”

Draper, ranked world number 14, will face former world number one Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals. Fellow Briton Cameron Norrie also advanced, setting up a clash with world number one Carlos Alcaraz.

Draper’s Comeback Reminds the World of His Threat

Djokovic, a five-time winner at Indian Wells, had previously defeated Draper in their only prior meeting at Wimbledon in 2021. He started strong, claiming the opening set with 87% of points won on serve. Draper, however, fought back, elevating his level as the match progressed. One highlight was a grueling 26-shot rally that Djokovic won early in the decider, only for Draper to break the Serb’s next service game.

Serving for the match at 5-4, Draper was broken, sending the contest into a tie-break. In a tense finale, both players were virtually doubled over with exhaustion before Draper sealed a memorable victory. “It was a real physical battle with a lot of ups and downs,” Draper said. “Coming through that match is something I will never forget.”

Djokovic, participating in his first tournament since the Australian Open in January, acknowledged the toll of the long rallies. “It cost me a break after,” he admitted. “Winning that point felt great, but I ran out of gas. Draper is playing at a great level. He’s a great player and a great guy.”

Despite winning one more point than Draper overall, Djokovic could not convert opportunities in the crucial moments, underscoring Draper’s resilience. Analysts noted that the victory not only boosts Draper’s confidence but also reminds the world’s best players of the threat he poses.

Norrie Sets Up Alcaraz Showdown

Cameron Norrie also impressed, maintaining his unbeaten streak at Indian Wells this year. He followed a win over sixth seed Alex de Minaur with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over world number 117 Rinky Hijikata in just over an hour. Norrie, the 2021 champion at the tournament, faces a formidable opponent in Alcaraz, who remains undefeated this season.

Norrie, however, has won three of his eight previous tour-level encounters with Alcaraz, including their most recent meeting at the Paris Masters in October. He credited an intensive pre-tournament practice with world number two Jannik Sinner for boosting his form. “We ended up practising for three hours and 20 minutes on centre court, cancelling other plans just to keep going. That really set the tone for the tournament,” Norrie told BBC Sport.

As Indian Wells progresses, Draper and Norrie’s performances have put British tennis in the spotlight, proving both are capable of challenging the sport’s elite. Draper’s win over Djokovic in particular serves as a defining moment in his comeback, showing the world he remains a serious contender.
