Justin Timberlake's Drink Driving Footage

Bodycam footage capturing Justin Timberlake’s 2024 drink driving arrest in New York has been released, drawing widespread attention. The pop star previously tried to block the video but eventually reached a settlement with the Village of Sag Harbor, allowing authorities to release it on Friday.

Timberlake, 45, was stopped by police in June 2024 in Sag Harbor, an upscale village in the Hamptons known for celebrity visitors. Officers noticed his vehicle drifting into the wrong lane and failing to stop at a stop sign. They initially charged him with driving while intoxicated, but Timberlake pleaded guilty to a lesser traffic offence of driving while impaired.

The footage spans more than eight hours. It captures moments from the roadside stop and interactions at the police station. In the video, Timberlake appears visibly unsteady during standard sobriety tests. He attempts to explain that he is on a world tour, but stumbles over his words when officers question him.

During the stop, an officer speaks to Timberlake through the driver’s window, pointing out that his grey BMW drifts onto the left side of the road. Timberlake apologizes, explaining that the car is a rental. The interaction grows slightly awkward when the officer asks him to repeat his name and show his license. Timberlake reminds the officer of his celebrity status.

The charging documents describe Timberlake’s eyes as bloodshot and glassy. They note a noticeable odour of alcohol on his breath. The bodycam shows him performing various field sobriety tests, including walking heel-to-toe and following an officer’s hand movements with his eyes. He declines a breathalyser test and admits feeling nervous, commenting on the difficulty of the tests.

Eventually, officers handcuff Timberlake and place him in a police vehicle. The footage also captures an associate approaching the officers, asking for clarification and pleading for leniency.

Before the release, Timberlake’s legal team argued that the video portrayed him in a vulnerable state and could damage his reputation. However, a judge ruled that releasing the bodycam footage did not violate privacy. Both parties agreed to a partially redacted version, which authorities then made public.

After pleading to the lesser charge, Timberlake faced penalties including a $500 fine, a $260 surcharge, and 25 hours of community service. He also made a public safety statement urging others not to drive after drinking.

He said, “Even if you’ve had one drink, don’t get behind the wheel of a car. This is a mistake I have made, but I hope whoever is watching and listening right now can learn from this.”

The footage sparked renewed discussion about celebrity accountability and public safety. Some viewers expressed sympathy for Timberlake. Others stressed the importance of legal consequences, highlighting that the law applies to everyone equally.

Experts noted that high-profile drink-driving incidents often serve as cautionary tales. Timberlake’s willingness to address his mistake and issue a public safety message earned praise as a responsible step.
