The mayor of Marseille, France’s second-largest city, said Wednesday that Kanye West is not welcome in the city. The announcement follows news of his June concert at the Velodrome stadium.

The rapper, also known as Ye, has sparked outrage with recent antisemitic statements and provocative actions. Last May, he released a track titled “Heil Hitler,” coinciding with the 80th anniversary of Nazi Germany’s defeat.

These controversies have cost him fans, sponsorships, and business opportunities worldwide. The Marseille show, scheduled for June 11, will be his only stop in France. Tickets have not gone on sale yet.

Socialist Mayor Benoit Payan spoke out on X. He wrote, “I refuse to let Marseille be a showcase for those who promote hatred and unabashed Nazism.” He stressed that the city should reject events that glorify extremist ideas.

French law restricts local authorities from banning concerts freely. Officials can only stop a show if it could break the law or threaten public safety, according to France’s highest administrative court.

The organizing company, Mars 360, said it added strict clauses in West’s contract to prevent illegal statements during the concert. A spokesperson said, “We have been very careful to respect French law.

Political figures also joined the debate. Fabienne Bendayan, former regional head of the Jewish organization CRIF and running mate to a right-wing candidate, opposed the concert. She wrote on X, “Someone who openly admires Hitler cannot perform on a stage in a city built on diversity and remembrance.”

West addressed his past actions earlier this year. He blamed “disconnected moments” for poor judgment. In late 2023, he apologized to Jewish communities after saying, “I love Nazis,” which caused global condemnation.

The concert debate highlights tension between freedom of expression and public safety in France. Officials must balance legal obligations with community concerns.

For now, Marseille plans to host West on June 11. Fans and critics are watching closely. The situation shows how his controversial remarks continue to affect his career.
