A shift is underway on the streaming platform operated by Amazon as Prime Video Ultra begins replacing a long-standing viewing option for subscribers.

The update signals a new phase for Prime Video, introducing upgraded video quality, expanded downloads, and more simultaneous streaming while maintaining the ad-free experience many viewers value.

Starting April 10, the platform’s existing ad-free tier will transition into the newly branded Prime Video Ultra, which carries a monthly price of $4.99. Subscribers will also have the option to choose an annual plan priced at $45.99, offering a discounted rate compared with paying month-to-month.

Notices about the upcoming change began reaching users on March 13, informing them that the familiar ad-free option would evolve into a more advanced viewing package.

Enhanced Streaming Experience for Viewers

While the outgoing plan focused primarily on eliminating advertisements, the replacement introduces a wider set of improvements designed to elevate how audiences watch content.

One of the biggest additions is access to 4K Ultra High Definition streaming. This format delivers four times the resolution of traditional HD, giving viewers sharper visuals and more detailed images, an upgrade particularly noticeable on larger screens.

The platform is also adding immersive Dolby Atmos sound technology. This audio format surrounds the viewer with multidimensional sound, bringing a more cinematic feel to films, television series, and live events.

Offline viewing capabilities will expand as well. Under the previous ad-free option, subscribers could download up to 25 titles for later viewing without internet access. With the new tier, that number jumps significantly to 100 titles, allowing users to store far more content for travel or limited-connectivity situations.

Another feature likely to appeal to households is the increase in simultaneous streaming. The previous limit of three devices will rise to five devices at the same time. The change stands in contrast to some competitors’ tightening account-sharing policies.

For example, services such as HBO Max have taken steps to curb password sharing in recent years. By increasing its device limit, the Amazon platform appears to be moving in the opposite direction, at least for now.

Subscribers who receive the video service through a regular Amazon Prime membership will still have access to a different option called the Prime Video Benefit.

That version allows four concurrent streams and up to 50 downloads, but does not remove advertisements or include the enhanced video and audio formats available in the new plan.

Competition Intensifies in the Streaming Market

The introduction of Prime Video Ultra comes as streaming services across the industry adjust pricing structures, introduce new tiers, and search for ways to keep audiences engaged.

Competitors like Disney+ and Paramount+ have also experimented with new bundles, advertising models, and subscription plans as the digital entertainment market grows increasingly competitive.

Despite entering the market later than pioneers like Netflix, Amazon’s streaming platform has steadily expanded its presence through a combination of original productions, licensed titles, and live sports.

Through its studio arm, Amazon MGM Studios, the service has released several widely discussed shows and films. Popular series on the platform include Fallout, Reacher, The Boys, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and The Summer I Turned Pretty.

The catalog also features original films such as Heads of State, Red One, Road House, and The Accountant 2.

Sports content has become another major pillar of the service. Viewers can watch events from leagues including the NFL, NBA, WNBA, NASCAR, and NWSL, along with coverage of the prestigious The Masters golf tournament.

The platform’s 2026 lineup has already generated attention with titles such as Young Sherlock from Guy Ritchie and the upcoming series Scarpetta starring Nicole Kidman.

For now, the newly introduced Prime Video Ultra plan is available only to subscribers in the United States. Whether the upgraded tier will expand to international markets remains unclear, but the shift highlights how streaming companies continue refining their platforms to compete for viewers’ time and attention.
