Deadly Russian Drone and Missile Attack Kills 17 Across Ukraine

A deadly drone strike and missile assault launched by Russia has killed at least 17 people across Ukraine. The attack marks one of the most intense waves in recent months.
Russia fired hundreds of aerial weapons in multiple waves overnight. The strikes hit several cities and caused widespread destruction. Authorities say the operation shows a clear rise in long-range attacks as the war enters its fifth year.
Cities Hit as Massive Overnight Assault Unfolds
Ukraine’s officials reported that Russia launched more than 700 drones and missiles during the overnight operation. The attacks hit Odesa, Kyiv, and Dnipro the hardest. In Odesa, nine people died after strikes hit residential areas.
In Kyiv, officials confirmed four deaths, including a child. In Dnipro, another four people lost their lives as fires spread through buildings.
In Kyiv, air raid sirens woke residents around 02:30 local time. Soon after, explosions followed across the city. Witnesses shared images of burning buildings and thick smoke rising into the sky. One video showed a drone crashing into an apartment block. The footage captured the scale and speed of the attack.
Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, confirmed that a 12-year-old boy was among those killed. He also reported that 45 people suffered injuries. Rescue teams worked through the rubble in the Podilsky district.
There, part of a 16 storey building collapsed after a direct hit. Despite the damage, emergency workers managed to pull a mother and child out alive.
In northern Kyiv, four medical responders suffered injuries while helping victims. Meanwhile, officials in Dnipro reported repeated strikes on civilian infrastructure. Fires spread quickly through parts of the city, leaving dozens injured. The attack in Dnipro followed several similar strikes in recent days. This pattern suggests a continued focus on urban areas.
Regional Fallout and Growing International Tension
Further north east, strikes in Kharkiv injured two people. A 77-year-old woman and a 66-year-old man both suffered wounds after a drone impact. In the southern regions of Mykolaiv and Kherson, officials reported power outages. Damage to key infrastructure caused the outages and disrupted daily life.
Ukraine’s air force responded to the assault and intercepted many of the incoming weapons. Officials said they shot down 636 drones and 31 missiles. However, several weapons still reached their targets. Authorities recorded direct hits at 26 locations across the country. These hits show the scale and reach of the operation.
President Volodymyr Zelensky strongly condemned the attack. He called for stronger action against Moscow and urged allies to maintain sanctions. Volodymyr Zelensky argued that such strikes show Russia wants to continue the conflict instead of ending it.
Ukraine’s foreign minister also spoke out. He described the bombardment as a war crime. In addition, he called for more military and financial support from partner nations. At the same time, Kyiv continues to seek urgent economic support from the European Union. Officials say steady funding remains important for both defence and stability.
On the Russian side, officials reported casualties linked to Ukrainian drone activity. In the Krasnodar Krai region, they confirmed the death of a child. Both sides continue to trade accusations as the conflict goes on.
Diplomatic talks have stalled in recent weeks. As a result, the latest attack shows how fragile ceasefire efforts remain. It also highlights the growing humanitarian cost of the war. Air defence systems face constant strain, while strikes increasingly hit civilian areas. For now, Ukraine continues to call for stronger protection and steady support from its allies.
